Jamie Thomas Answers Your Queries

October 3, 2008

Jamie Thomas is many things: Professional Skateboarder, business owner, family man, and director of everything Black Box is going to be answering your questions! Ask him whatever you’d like to know from his long, amazing, and hessian career, which don’t seem to slow down.  If you’re lucky enough and not boring, he’ll pick your question and answer them for you on ActiveRideShop.com You have until October 20th to get your questions in and they will post the video of Jamie’s answers by November 1st.

Don’t think that just because Jamie Thomas is like God to you, that you can’t go ahead and ask him the hard-hitting questions people often avoid.  Like, “So Jamie, you went from having the baldest head in skating to the most hessian.  How do you do it?”  Or for instance, “Jamie, do you think that Sarah Palin is a bimbo?”

I really don’t think he will shy away from the topics that matter and I encourage all of you out there to partake in this important discussion.  Make sure you get to Active in time to allow Jamie enough time let your questions sink in.

Oakley’s Uniquely Campaign Becomes New Film

October 3, 2008

Last year Oakley started a campaign for women called “Uniquely” featuring some of its athletes in photo shoots/advertisements and videos.  Now that campaign has kicked into high gear with the release of a new HD film featuring most of the top-flight Oakley women in a “cultural journey” around the globe.

Among the featured athletes are snowboarders Gretchen Bleiler, Marie-France Roy, Elena Hight and Chanelle Sladics, surfers Karina Petroni and Layne Beachley, skiers Kristi Leskinen and Grete Eliassen and wakeboarder Amber Wing, among others.

The film will be distributed in the US via Foam magazine and through Oakley retailers, and an online release is probably an option down the line.  There will also be a five-city/three country tour in October starting in Colorado and ending in London (check out the release at the end of this story for more on that).

For more about the film you can check out Oakley and watch the trailer.  And if you’re interested, the music is MGMT “Time to Pretend.” Pretty sweet, eh?
Here’s the full release about the film.

Oakley Announces Women’s Action Sports Film Entitled, “Uniquely”
1242 Productions Releases Fifth Film

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif., Oct. 1, 2008 – Oakley, Inc., in conjunction with 1242 Productions, announced today the upcoming release of “Uniquely,” a 35-minute travel inspired women’s action sports film shot exclusively in High-Definition (HD).

“’Uniquely’ showcases the diverse personalities, lifestyles and athletic talents of the Oakley women’s team,” said Liesl Holtz, “Uniquely” Executive Producer. “The film exposes the joys and challenges of being a professional athlete while inspiring us all to create our own adventures.”

“Uniquely” takes viewers on a cultural journey through Japan, Russia, Colorado, California, Indonesia, Australia and beyond.  Explore the remote corners of the earth with the women of Oakley, as they search for perfect conditions while building lasting memories and lifelong friendships.

The film stars snowboarders Gretchen Bleiler, Marie-France Roy, Elena Hight, Anne-Flore Marxer, Chanelle Sladics and Etsuko Tominaga; skateboarders Lauren Perkins and Lyn-z Adams Hawkins; surfers Karina Petroni, Leilani Gryde, Layne Beachley and Claudia Goncalves; skiers Kristi Leskinen, Grete Eliassen and Angeli VanLaanen and wakeboarder Amber Wing.

“To me, ‘Uniquely’ is a reunion of passionate girls who want to share their passion for their sport,” said Oakley snowboarder Marie-France Roy. “It’s a mix of adventures and portraits that show how beautiful life can be when you find what you really love and you sacrifice everything for it.”

The film was shot, directed and edited by John Roderick, who used HD and RED cameras to capture progressive action while creating a vivid picture of the world.

“Uniquely” will be distributed by Foam magazine in the United States, Cooler magazine in Europe, Yen magazine in Australia and Transworld Snowboarding magazine in Japan.

The film is also available at participating Oakley retailers.

DC’s King Of Los Angeles Is Back

October 1, 2008

There are a few King’s in Los Angeles that need to be noted.  First and foremost, the home of Los Angeles’s hockey team The LA Kings is probably the biggest.  But then again nobody watches them.  Nobody that I know of anyway, so let’s put them near the bottom of my list.  Then there’s the Lion King who put on one of the most wonderful performances for eight straight weeks at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater.  He really warmed my heart.  And of course everybody’s favorite place to dine, Burger King.  You gotta love them Whoppers.  A few notable kings are Chung King restaurant, B.B. King Blues Club, and Rodney King, perhaps.

Well maybe the most exciting king of Los Angeles is Vincent Alvarez who won DC’s “King Of Los Angeles” least year.  But he’s about to pass the throne over to a new lucky and heavily skilled Angelino who can throw it down above all who gets in his or her way.

The very unique competition starts this October 18th.  Where will this all go down? Two places actually.  At 10AM, those who think they have what it takes will meet at the ever so famous Lockwood Elementary School.  Then the competition will continue at 3PM at Belmont High School for more gnarlyness.  There will be $10,000 in prize money awarded and more likely than not, have a bunch of companies go after the winner.

After a long day of skating, I suggest we all go have a bite at Burger King to energize us for that night’s performance of “The Lion King” not at the Pantages, but at the West Hollywood Community Theater.  It will be so grand!

Toy Machine Halloween Signing

September 30, 2008

I can feel that Halloween is right around the corner.  The crisp Fall air is almost intoxicating.  What am I talking about?  I don’t know about you but it’s hot as hell outside for me in Los Angeles.  Yesterday it was about 93 degrees in the Valley.  Yes, 93.  And today was a bit overcast but it seems that the clouds just trapped the hot air inside the atmosphere making it feel like an oven outside.  This sucks.  When is it going to get cold already?

Anyway Toy Machine will at least do their part by sharing this October 31st (Halloween) by having a team demo and signing at Active San Dimas.  The festivities begin at 4PM and will go till 6PM.  The flyer says to make sure to wear your Halloween costumes.  I’m actually an expert at good costumes so here are some suggestions to you kids out there that might want to impress the Toy Machine Team.

1. Bilbo Baggins
2. A piece of poo
3. The Olsen Twins
4. G.G. Allin
5. Tony Little

Embrace my suggestions and be there at the demo to impress Billy Marks, Ed Templeton, Johnny Layton, Nick Trapasso, Josh Harmony, Matt Bennett, and Austin Stephens. And don’t miss the premiere of Flim’s Hail Skatan!

Element Harvest Festival

September 28, 2008

Element Skateboards in affiliation with Beachworks are holding their second annual
Harvest Festival in one of the biggest farmlands in North America, Torrance, CA.  I myself am not very familiar with the Harvest Festival and at first I confused it with the Harvest stickers I would often see about a two decades ago as a kid.  But those Harvest stickers were meant for the “Harvest Crusades”, which is like some men only evangelistic crazy koo-koo thing that went on at Angel Stadium.  And considering the only thing I know about farming is Farmer John’s hotdogs, and even those, I’m not exactly sure what they contain.

But this Element Harvest Festival seems pretty nice.  Like a peaceful afternoon I can take my grandmother to.  The Element Harvest Festival is an Elemental Awareness celebration that includes an all hands on afternoon.  The festival also includes an Element team demo, team signing, amateur skate contest, organic food giveaways, live rare animals, prizes and more.  Check out the flyer for all the details.
